BUDL has been challenged by the private funding community to raise $20,000 from individuals to support the expansion of debate into Baltimore City's middle schools. Help us reach our goal and share in the success of new middle school debate squads!
WHO WE ARE
The Baltimore Urban Debate League is the country’s flagship urban debate league – one of nearly 20 other urban debate leagues throughout the nation. Over the past nine years, the Baltimore Urban Debate League has reintroduced debate into Baltimore’s public school classrooms as a strategy to engage and inspire the most needy students from the most under resourced schools. Since BUDL’s inception in 1999 - with 90 pioneering students and 16 teachers in 8 of the City’s most challenged high schools, and with the fantastic support of BCPSS and the community - the League has flourished. In the 2007-08 school year, BUDL expects to engage more than 1,000 students and 100 teachers from 60 middle and high schools across the City.
WHO WE SERVE
The Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL) extends the reach of its small staff by training over 100 Baltimore City teachers a year as debate instructors and coaches. We provide professional development in school day curricular/classroom debate instruction, competitive debate coaching in the out-of-school hours and civic engagement through the League’s public debate events in the Baltimore community. Our students are heard and recognized as leaders in our school buildings and in the City when they speak up from locations like City Hall, the Nation’s Capitol, on the radio airwaves and in our public markets.
While all youth interested in the debate are welcome, we specifically target students who need debate the most, students with high rates of absenteeism, delinquency, educational disinvestment or academic underdevelopment. The Baltimore Urban Debate League targets, reaches and alters the academic trajectories of our students sending more than 90% of our graduates on to college each year.
Please consider registering with RealityCharity to make your donation, leaving your address and email, so that we can keep you informed of our upcoming events. To make your contribution off-line, please contact Anna Minkowski: 410-752-2835.
